Vets are people and some people, unfortuntely, are idiots. I'm sorry you got a bad one. There are good ones out there.

I'm glad you came here for advice and am even happier that your little Terence doesn't seem to be having any side-effects from the Vit. A. Hows his mouth doing now?

Well I was only concerned it was a bit long... Which it apparently wasn't anyway! But you learn I guess... He doesn't much like having iodine ol spread round his mouth morning and night but he seems really good, he's eating well and seems happy, no skin problem as yet!!!

Just thankful I found this forum and have access to so much knowledge... I dread to think what state Terence would be in had I not stumbled across it, thank you all for your input, it really helps the novices such as myself 😃

Sometimes a bit of knowledge for you can be a bad thing, too. Your vet is probably an ok person. And if your tortoise doesn't suffer any skin problems, the vet did nothing wrong. Keeping a tortoise, knowing how to care for his daily needs is a whole lot different from going to school and studying books on "treating" a tortoise, or even treatment experience. Unless a vet keeps tortoises himself, then his knowledge is in the health field, and not in the day to day care field. This is not a bad thing, because the main reason you go to the vet is for his knowledge of illnesses and treatment.

So use us as a resource for the day-to-day care of your tortoise and for our collective experiences, and use your vet when you need him for your tortoise's health.

Well it's day 4 and Terence is still looking pretty normal, still eating and pretty active, so I guess all is well :) have taken on board what you said about the vet!

Wise words, Yvonne Thank you!

... spoken by one of the TRUE good ones who actually keeps and breeds his own tortoises and knows what he's talking about.

We're lucky to have you here Doc. Thanks for chiming in.

I still think I would switch vets.....just saying. Anyway I was wondering if your vet sales dry tort food? I went to a vet that sold a little bag, maybe quart size of Mazuri for $20+ dollars. I buy a huge bag ( maybe 50 Lbs) at the feed store for $40. Someone was making big money off Muzuri their.

Mazuri is sold in 25 pound bags.. many people cant store or use that much so many people offer a smaller amount for less.. $20 is a lot for a quart size.. but its good to try it out..

Well, hopefully the vet gave low doses of vit A that is nothing to mess with. It killed one of my boxies. Her skin fell off, it was the sadest thing. A lot of the vets whom are inexperienced think that the vitamin injections are the answer. But they are doing them more harm then good. For anyone reading this who has not gone thru this, please think twice before you have your vet give any kind of vitamin injections to your tortoise or turtles.....
