I noticed this on Quinn today...is it an abscess? A tumor?
Either way, the local vet is closed but I'm making a vet appointment in the morning....this is worrying

Probably some sort of abscess. Can you maneuver the loose skin back away from the bump to get a better look at it?

He retreats into his shell when I put my fingers near his face so I don't know if I can unfortunately

So I posted a few days ago about the abscess Quinn had and today was his vet appointment!
He did great, the abscess was lanced and swabbed with betadine (I don't know how to spell it sorry) and cleaned.

Vet prescribed a month of antibiotic injections, which I will be doing.

So all and all great news! I have some photos but I think they may be considered graphic so I won't post them 😅

I'd like to see the pictures. It's educational.
Ok! Here's the photos of the open wound and the pus.
Also if you're the one who moved it to this thread, thanks!

OMG! What a strange place for an abscess. How very interesting. Glad you were able to get it taken care of. I was thinking it would be in the neck, but it was in the loose skin.

Yeah! It's extremely odd! The vet said she'd never seen an abscess on a tortoise or turtle be anywhere other than the ear. She was very confused but certain he wasn't in any particular danger from it. It's just a normal, albeit oddly placed, abscess.
Did some research and I've literally been unable to find anyone else with a tortoise who had an abscess there, it's so weird!
But yeah he's good now! I'll just watch him and do the antibiotic shots. I have a pretty good idea of why this occured and the reasoning is I was gone for a month and my dad was left with Quinn to care for him and he's, uh, uneducated in tortoises and when his previous basking bulb died out while I was gone he just put a regular house bulb 50 watt in its place! And that thing was cold! Nowhere near hot enough. Poor baby probably got bacteria from something since his immunity was lowered due to the bad temps. That's just my thoughts though, I could be totally wrong. Either way I split the blame 50/50. 😅 Glad he's ok now though
