I'd go ahead and use it. You can put some moistened sphagnum moss inside for him to burrow into.

They work well if u out moss in it and keep it moistened

I have one of those and my 1 year old tort still prefers his little tiny half log. The one that moves when he does, haha. I hope he starts to use it some day soon. I have mine outside. Didn't realize that it retains heat, thanks for posting the link, I learned something.

I use a half log for my torts, but when they were smaller I used a plastic container also. For my geckos I found that a cheapy plastic food container works really well. You know the ones that are like thow away tupperware? It is easy to cut a hole in the side and you can put it up-side down with the lid on. I put moss in mine.

Looks good, You might also try a plastic Tupperware container. Cheaper and better able to hold moisture if the opening is smaller.
