This is our female pancake that we posted about nesting 5 weeks ago. She is laying another egg for us. We still have the first in the incubator.

Well she dug all afternoon in the nesting box. First in one area, then another, then another. She never laid an egg and eventually fell asleep in the box. Now she is in the warm area of the cage (not the nesting box). No egg. Should we be concerned about a retained egg? Is this normal?

She is doing what is often termed "test" nests. For some reason each time something didn't quite suit her. No need to be worrying yet. ;)

I don't know about Pancakes but perhaps she will dig more tomorrow and lay. My greek digs (what I call test nests)nests but does not lay for several days. Then one day their they are. Fingers crossed there are no problems.

Thats great news Tim and Robin. :D and great pictures. :D

No need to worry about retained eggs quite yet. :D But from what I can see is that you need to pack down your nest box substrate very well and add more if need be. They like it to hold it's shape when they dig a nest, not be loose and consistantly falling back in the hole.

Oh thanks Danny. Last time we had just made the nest box and so the sand/peat was much wetter. I bet it was more to her liking and had the consistently you mentioned. We will wet it today, fill it more and see if that does the trick.

Whew!

Well she was either making a test nest or didn't like the nesting material so loose yesterday. But we added more water to the sand/peat and today she dug her nest quite quick and laid an egg. She remained in the nest for a couple of hours. We didn't collect the egg until she had exited the nest. This is egg #2 which weighed in at 25g (last one was 22g). Here is a picture.

This is so cool. I am almost as excited as when mine lay eggs.

How long does it take for pancakes to mature?

Are you asking about how long to incubate? Or how long to reach sexual maturity?

Thats great news Tim and Robin :D

Vince they can mature as quick as 4 1/2", but usually it's at least 5 inches for females. :D

I was wondering how long it took for them to reach breeding size.
