20130110_184827.jpgHello everyone I have added some eco earth to my sulcatas' enclosure in certain sports (under their favorite hide and at the end of the terrarium). Is it possible to grow grass if I add seeds to the eco earth? I have a 48" t8 uvb 10.0, cypress mulch, under tank heat mat, night heat lamp

The grass should grow okay, it's more the tortoises will be either chowing down on it or stomping it before it gets very tall. :D :D :D

What Jacqui says, also it will begin dieing as the coco fiber and all that will become densely compact at the grass roots will die from the poorly aerated soil.

So throw a couple earthworms into the enclosure as well and they woo aerate the soil.

Two things:
First and foremost, we had a member whose tortoise recently drowned in that same kind of water bowl. I highly recommend you pull it out right away. I prefer to use terra cotta plant saucers sunk into the soil.

Second thing is grass will start to sprout, but your sulcata will eat or trample it before it can Everett started. Try getting some small plastic trays and growing the grass there instead. Sink a tray into the substrate, let him graze on it for a day or two, and then swap it out with a fresh tray. If you grow several trays at a time, he'll always have fresh greens while the other trays are recovering.

I want to try the tray and seed idea, what is the proper seed to get, preferably the fastest growing...?

Would the earthworms do any harm directly or indirectly to my sullies?

I like pasture mixes from Peaceful Valley Farms. Their premium pasture mix grows like a bad weed.

Thanks for your reply, is it the bowl or the water level?
I will block it somehow at least until it grows a little, YES I already started doing that, the only reason I wanted grass inside their terrarium is because it gets kind of cold outside even during the day like around 50s at night even 30s (San Jose, California), too bad because I have a lot of grass in my backyard.

I grew grass using the ceasr wet dog food trays, it worked great and they where kept by by kitch window nice and warm room with good sunlight in the morning.

My only issue was it was bad advice to grow grass for my yellow foot :( my yellow foot couldn't be bothered by it lol but it will grow. And they are only about 2" deep so they can sit good under/in the substrate. I grew mine using coco fiber not even soil just an FYI :D good luck and have fun

It's the bowl. They are too steep, deep and slick. If a tortoise isn't comfortable they won't drink from it. If they are comfortable, they can tip over in it.

Use some scissors and cut up handfuls of your outside grass and feed it to him. That's what I do nearly every day. You can sprinkle some grass on top of any other foods you are feeding that day.
