Ok so here's the problem. I finnaly got Shakespeare to stop only eating when hand fed (yay score one me). But now he just stares at me when I'm making sure he will eat and if I leave the room and sneak back in I catch him eating. But if he sees me he zooms around his table until I leave. What the heck? Anybody elses tort not eating if they even much as see you?

I don't know if they just don't have the mental capacity to figure it out or what, but most tortoises think of YOU as the food. You can put the food down, but they'll plow right through it to get over to YOU. You're going to have to re-train your tortoise into realizing that tantalizing-looking pile of "stuff" on the dinner plate is the food and NOT YOU!

My strategy is to plop the food down and go about my business. So far every single one of them have figured it out and not starved to death.

Ya they associate the person with food. Just natural, no problems. They will find the food if they are hungry, no worries! :)

Alright, thank you everybody. I have actually realized him plowing through his food to get to me but never thought of it as he thinks I'm the food. Very good points. Again thank you all so much.
