I like all tortoises and turtles. I f I had to choose it would be albino of any species that is just my opinion. I live in Florida and I hatched out a leu kwung tung/ nigrican and it was very pretty ,but I think normal species are just as pretty. I think all of us who live in the USA have the best looking native turtles in the world. I mean come on North American woods, spotteds, eastern box,FLA box, blandings, bogs, etc.

Hmmm...i would say they all have their pros and cons in terms of care. I think they are a great pet to have if you are into having a full time dedicated hobby. For me, I wasn't expecting it, but I've become ADDICTED to making sure everything is just right for my baby redfoot, his humidity, lighting, etc. I have never heard of someone complaining about their tortoise personally. I think people who get tortoises really like them because they are high maintenance pets (IMO)

Actually I like all tortoises. Don't think I,have seen one that I didn't like. However, this is just seeing them, not owning them. As for turtles, there are many I don't care for as far as looks, but looks isn't everything, right!
As more maintenance, I think they are pretty low maintenance. Once you get everything right, use timers and thermostats, it's pretty much just feed, water and clean up poop, like any other animal, except tortoises don't need brushing, walking, etc, like other animals.

My worst has got to be Aldabra purely for the selfish reason that I don't have enough land to keep one (...or three)! I would love to keep an Aldabra and be there as it matures and they are so nice to look at but it would be unfair on both me and the tort.

For me, there is always something to admire or appreciate about any turtle or tort. I may not want them living in my bathtub or even in my yard, but that doesn't mean they have no place in The Great Scheme of Things.
Just my 2 bits. :p

Yeah, worst species isn't how I'd word it. Worst species for me, yeah sure. Worst for me is probably the Russian. I've just had very bad luck with the ones I've adopted from people, to the point that I stopped accepting them around ten years ago. I had one male drown to death in a burrow that filled up in a flash flood. It was awful. I was at work when the rain started, and I didn't get back home in time. The other two female Russians were sitting out of their shelters, wet and uncomfortable. He never left his burrow. I adopted another female who wasn't eating (the owner was desperate and didn't have the money for a vet), and she had a very bad skin infection. After initial treatment, she seemed to be getting better, but after a series of July rain storms, she declined over a matter of days. I started keeping her indoors under an MVB, but I don't think she had the strength to recover. After she died and I found forever homes for the other two ladies, I decided against keeping them again. Besides that, they're incredibly mean, with the biting and the non stop dominance play. Maybe I'm judging the species based upon my experiences with wild caught animals that have been through the ringer, but I don't figure I'd ever keep Russians again, especially given that my colony of margies is in a good place right now, and for the first time ever, I have a solid plan on how my group will grow. I honestly don't know how you more experienced folks on this forum handle all the different species. There's just so much time and effort involved in keeping a two or three species group. I can't imagine handling five or six species with varied habitat and dietary requirements. Not to mention all the food you have to grow. Anytime not spent caring for tortoises has got to be spent farming.

No Such thing as worst species.
But we all have our preferences and our likes and dislikes. I prefer tortoises over turtles and have zero desire to keep aquatic turtles of any kind. So many of them are incredibly beautiful but I still would rather see pictures than care for them myself.
Now tortoises?? I could go tortoise broke because there are many species is love to keep. Some species are completely out of the question due to space requirements and other due to laws. Someday I plan to keep larger species, but for now I'm content with my leopards and Russian.

LOL! Since box turtles are "terrapene", Enchilada, I'm pretty sure that's what Benjamin meant. At least, that's the way I took it.

But the ones I've seen haven't been in very good shape, and they just didn't look very pretty to me.

Love all tortoises but I hate aquatic turtles! Well I don't hate them just their up keep. They're so messy and a pain to clean. It's also pretty pricey to keep up with them since they're usually voracious eaters, and with filter refills. Not to mention when they break a filter. Such a pain!
People are constantly dropping them off at my pet store, but I refuse to keep more than 2 in the store. Such a shame how some people care for the RES poorly too.

Mommy to:
Nevan- 8yr old human
Arden- Pappillon
Ella-Chihuahua
Toby-Tortoise shell cat
Tinka- Tabby cat
Rex- Ball python
Penny- Eastern Box turtle hatchling
Poppy- Russian tortoise

As Benjamin said, they are a love them or you have 'em genus. I must say, I really have fallen for my erosas now. Still love my reds as an all round tortoise, but erosas just have a certain prehistoric quality, and can have some pretty cool patterns.
With regards to the condition, the hinge does make them look a bit weird-even injured if you're not familiar at all with them. Also, they can be hard to acclimatize in captivity.
IMO, and I'm going to annoy a lot of keepers on this forum, but I can't stand Sulcatas, and I don't like the appearance or behavior of Russians.

Yep I'm offended! :) just kidding, I happen to like my little Russian and my little Boxturtle just fine. But sulcata are just too destructive and high maintenance for me. I think the traits that make one tortoise or turtle so great to one person are the exact traits that make them terrible for another. I would probably own about 10 different species if I had the time, money, and space.
