I know your question is meant for Tom, but I just wanted to comment that this is probably one of the more clear pictures and simplest explanations I have seen. The descriptions about the supracaudal scute are not commonly seen in these sort of sexing diagrams and is usually the first thing I look at. It's fairly accurate in my opinion. As it applies to sulcatas and maybe a couple of others at least.

It really depends upon what species you're talking about...for example, Russian tortoises don't fit that example at all. Redfooted tortoises are another that spring to mind.

Actually, I meant this question in general but I know some members have more experience with tortoises. The only person I remembered was Tom at this moment since I do t know how to tag people here.

To tag someone all you have to do is type the @ in front of their username. So to tag Tom you would type @Tom

I too agree with Neal and Yvonne. My male sulcata has all of the distinctions in that diagram. Interesting that it points out the supracaudal scute but does not mention the tail or shape of the anal scute. I guess it is hard to show all the subtleties in one simple diagram.

Yes, this is generally true, but there can be exceptions, and it doesn't look at everything. For example male russians have flat plastrons, and I have seen a few male sulcatas with relatively small gulars. Two other noteworthy things to look at are head size and shape, which is sometimes and indicator, and tail size and shape, as well as cloacal position on the tail.
