How smooth is smooth?

Hello, all!

I'm sorry I don't know how to send a picture, but perhaps someone can tell me whether a 3 year old Desert Tortoise's carapace should be
entirely smooth?

I posted a thread about this yesterday or the day before, and no one has responded, so I thought I'd try again.:)

I want to know if the shallow concentric grooves of my Cholla's carapace scutes are a sign that she is beginning to pyramid. She's always had them, and I presumed they were part of normal scute growth and "decoration,", but I've already made very many mistakes, and this might be one of them.

As always, I'll be grateful for any response from any of y'all. This forum is TOPS.

Thanks in advance.

P,S, Apropos of nothing, Cholla, who was lost and found earlier this week,:tort::Dis at the moment sleeping on my chest just under my chin and inside my shirt. As always when she does this, she makes occasional comfortable-sounding clicking noises with her beak. When she was lost I feared I'd never hear those little noises again. It's real bliss to have her back. Thanks to those who responded to my post with such understanding.

We need to see a pic or two to help with this.

There is a little button to the lower left of this box that I'm typing in that says "Attach files" with a little paperclip symbol. Click on that and follow the prompts to post pics in your thread. This is much easier on a lap top or desk top than on a phone.

Thanks, Tom. Okay, I see that I'm going to pay the local computer guru to come over and fix whatever's wrong with the my regular laptop. I've been postponing it b/c things are tight economically right now, as they are for so many people.

What I'm typing on now is my Chromebook, on which I have no pix stored, and no idea how to upload pix from my husband's iphone to this device. Once I get the other laptop up and running again, I should be able to attach some of the many Cholla photos I have on it.

Looking forward to your observations--and kinda dreading 'em too. I'd hate it if poor husbandry has caused C. to start to pyramid.

Be it known that without this forum, it would have taken me much, much longer to realize all the stuff I was doing wrong. Cholla now gets a soak every day, and spritzes too, and his some nice semi-most orchid bark in her indoor enclosure, which during all this warm, dry weather she now uses only at night.:tort::<3: Still working on the enlarged outdoor enclosure and night box, but progress is being made.

Easy peasy. The Attach files button is on the bottom left of your post.Click photo library for pics already taken. This will bring up your pics. Scroll down and click on the pics you want. A blue check mark ✔ will appear. When finished, click the add button at the top right. The pics will upload.

To take a pic, click the same attach files button, click take photo, take a photo. I think you click add then.

After either way, write something in the text box just above the pics, then 1) click to post or 2) click preview, then click post.

It can literally take seconds to do all this, takes longer to explain than do.

With the description you've come up with, I would say that it probably isn't pyramiding. If it starts to get larger and taller though, that's when you should get worried.

Thank you! Cool! But how do we send the pix to the Tortoise forum? I.e. to what address do we went them once the pics are uploaded and labeled. This may be a dumb question, but my husband and I are tech Neandrothals, or at best, Cro Magnon.

Do you access the forum on a smartphone? Or only on the Chromebook? Are the pictures on the smartphone?

OK, pry your husband's phone out of his hand.
Open his browser (probably Chrome).
In the address bar, type www.tortoiseforum.org You may have to sign in to the forum with your user name and password.
Find this thread.
In the box that you would use to compose a post, at the bottom left there's a button that says "attach files".
Tap the button. Places where pictures are stored on the phone will pop up.
Find a pic(s) you want to post.
Tap each pic you want to send.
Upper right tap the button that says "done".
The pic(s) will be transferred to the post you started.
Tap "full size" beside each pic.
The pic(s) will be inserted into your post, wherever your cursor is. If you want them at the end, just tap to position the cursor at the end.
Post your message.

Re: pix of Cholla

Thanks so much, KarenSoCal et al. Now lets see if I can follow directions.

ribbit . . .

The pix I selected appear on the reply I posted on the phone, but none appear here, on my Chromebook.

ribbit . . . ribbit . . .

Whaaa. . . . .? Now they do appear on the Chromebook. It seems I manged to send triples of every pic. No clue how I did that. Apologies for the unintentional photo overkill.

Looks perfect to me.

The growth rings are not causing pyramiding in this case, so nothing to worry about. The growth rings form because the tortoise is not growing steadily at a constant rate, but having regular growth "spurts" (the groove forms when the tortoise pauses growth). In your case they appear to be annual growth rings since there are three clear rings and your tortoise is three years old. However in some cases tortoises will put down more than one growth ring in a year.

I think I acutally sent quadruples!
If you see Cholla's beauty you are clearly a person of taste and discernment. :D I presume your compliment to Cholla indicates that her scutes look okay?

I think she looks fine. As for the ...shall we say...more defined growth rings...we have a pet store rescue Redfoot that has those same looking growth rings. I see no pyramiding
