Why would a tort sleep like this?

He slept like this, is it normal?

Here he is now fine after I picked him up, pulsing his neck.

(Might as well ask, why does Zvezda sleep like this, is it normal, this was a few days ago and shes fine now?)

I think they sleep in whatever position suits them and feels safe at the time.

I can't make out what I'm seeing in the 1st picture.
In the 3rd, I think he's got his head out and resting on the substrate...my star sleeps like that frequently. Neck stretched, face-planted into the orchid bark. When I come near sometimes he only bothers to open one eye...the message is clear...go away and leave me alone!

We've all had that look - frequently!!!
I think he's got everything tucked in in the first picture - a clear 'do not disturb!'!

If they feel safe, they sleep all-out like that.

Of course, if they are startled from a deep sleep, they will hyperventilate for a time.

If he has neck stretched he does not feel threatened and also allows warmth to his neck . Mine is often found neck and legs fully stretched basking. I say happy relaxed tort.
However worth checking your light, type and duration.... is he under the leaf hiding from it as bright etc...
