What size outdoor enclosure for 2 adult female Russian tortoise? It will be elevated off the ground. Also best substitute for it.

Hard to say. Many people here on the site (in my opinion) over estimate what size is needed. For me, I would feel comfortable with two Russians in an 8 foot by 3 foot enclosure. Others will differ but it really depends on the species and how active they are.

For example I have 5 leopards. My smallest male that is about 4 pounds literally walks for a few hours a day! It is crazy. So he needs some room to roam!

They will both need a separate enclosure as tortoises can’t live in pairs, especially Russians. Go the biggest you can go for each of them, 8x4 is considered the minimum but that’s on the small side for an outdoor space, try to go bigger than that.

Hopefully you’ll find some inspiration in the outdoor section here

I think you meant substrate? The natural grassy ground of your yard will be fine😊

Best advice to avoid two enclosures, get another Russian tortoise! 😀

No tortoises can be kept in twos, 8x3 is on the small side for indoors and small for outdoors

another female or male could work, but obviously there would need to be a quarantine period of at least a year, so there won’t be any avoiding separate enclosures for the time being🐢💚

With all the respect, tortoises can't live in pairs. Especially Russians. They are very territorial. (My Russian boy chases me down when I step into his enclosure. Maybe he feels I am Russian too😅).
