Well my little boy has been very busy lately with the girls. This is the 2nd time I have caught him in the act. Apparently one of the other gals is jealous! Let's pray for eggs!

I really would love to get another Three Toed and do the egg thing, but I still don't know if Izzy is a boy or girl. She is almost 2 years now. At what age would I be able to tell...I am leaning toward male right not. After all that, you might not get eggs????

Terry, I am not really sure. I only got these guys about 4-6 weeks ago as a rescue so I am still learning about them. If I get babies though, I will let you know! He is considerably smaller than the girls but I don't know if that makes a difference or not. I would certainly hope I would get eggs but we will have to wait and see!

ThanksDee...Can you look at Izzy and lean towards male or female by looking at his coloring? Is there another thing I have to look at????? I'm sure there is..Do your males look anything like this?

I really can't say by the coloring. Mine are a more olive color. The girls shells are very domed. His is a bit more sloped in the front, not as round. Also, he is so shy (towards me anyway not the shelled girls) that I have not gotten a good look at his eyes. I don't know if they are like the EBT's that the males have red eyes usually. I will try to get some more info and let you know. Izzy is really pretty though!

This might sound funny, but male box turtles have bigger back feet than females. Sometimes you can tell male because of the color of their eyes (either orange or red), but some females have red eyes too. Males tend to be more colorful, however some females can get pretty colorful too. Sometimes you can tell male from the shape of his carapace, but that's another crap shoot.

Do you get the impression that its difficult to sex the box turtles?

Well, I guess I'm not going to lean towards any specific sex until I see Izzy lovin up a rock in his (her) enclosure. lol And....I guess that won't even make any difference either. Tomorrow when Izzy comes out to eat I will look at her feet.
