I have a Russian tort named Doug and we've been together for a year or so. She's a healthy little gal and I love her. I grow all of her food and soak her often.

Anyway, I saw a hingeback tort today and I fell in love right away. I'm just curious about how hard they are to take care of. I did some research and they seem a little more complex than the Russians. Like them being omnivores. Is this an an accurate statement? Could you guys give me some advice on it? Is there a different type of tort that's a little more advanced you'd recommend first?

Thank you!

If your russian is your first tort/reptile---I would recommend you holding off a bit to allow yourself some research time..then when you are confident you can venture out from there...just what I think :D

Hingebacks vary a lot, kinixys is a varied genus-when people classify hingebacks as one, it is similar to classifying yellow foots and chacos under the same care- so you need to find out what species it is. Can you post pics? They are correct that they are omnivores though.

I will take a wild guess and say you saw a Homes? The erosa and Homes need a higher humidity level for example then the spekii or Bells... which is why the comment above asking which hingeback your looking at.

Overall I do not find hngebacks to be any harder to care for then my Russians... just different type of care. Like with all tortoises it depends on the animal as to how hard they are to care for. With picky and sick animals being the hardiest to deal with in my mind. Is this hingeback active? Eating well?
