Hey... im new to this site but i was just wondering... i have 2 sulcata tortoises named Kyna and Zoey... They are almost 2 years old and i have them in a 100 gallon fish tank... Kyna is getting really big and im afraid that in about another year she will be too big for the tank. I was wondering if anyone here lives in NJ and if you do what are you/ or do you have your tortoises in? It just scares me because i dont want to get rid of them but im not sure what im gonna be able to do with them...

I think you have a common problem of Sulcata owners. Hard to believe that tiny cute tort will someday become a tank! I would love to own Sulcatas if I lived in an area where they could be outside year round. But I live in NY, so that is not practical unless you have a huge house where you can have a huge indoor enclosure. I will be curious to know how you resolve your problem.

I also live in NJ. I kept Sulcatas, Leopards, Burmese Browns, Aldabras and other larger tortoises but parted with them because there aren't many options here once the cold weather sets in. The Meditrreanean tortoises such as Hermann's, Ibera and Marginata are much wiser choices for this area and for me simply because they can be hibernated and most stay smaller.

UNLESS YOU HAVE SOMETHING LIKE 1/4 ACRE PER TORTOISE.. [ that's not that much of an exaggeration ].. AT REQUIRED TEMPS, ETC. - IT IS NEVER A GOOD IDEA TO GET A HATCHLING, ETC. OF ANY OF THE "BIG" SPECIES! TOO MANY HAVE AND ARE LEARNING THAT NOW! WE'LL CONTINUE TO SAY IT UNTIL IT SINKS IN.... "PLAN AHEAD" - KNOW WHAT YOU ARE GETTING INTO BEFORE YOU GET THE FIRST ONE!!! KNOW THEIR REQUIREMENTS.

I'm really not trying to be the bad guy.. just trying to get the point across to everyone else.

I hope you can find a good home for them niky - they're already too big for a 100!

Hi, I am in NJ also. I have 4 sulcatas. PM me with your location. If you are not far, you are welcome to check out my enclosure. It's not easy being a sully owner in NJ!

Dee, What do you do with them in the winter? Large area in the basement?

Niky, if you do get the chance take Dee up on her offer to come see her set up. It is a wonderful one that allows for changing the pens as tortoises grow or need perhaps to be isolated from another one. Plus the biggest reason to go, is just to spend some time with these wonderful folks. Wait til you see their hummingbirds!

OH my hummingbirds and torts??? OH Dee I wanna come see too.. :) I guess it would be a long trip from Ms to your house.. :(

OH Niky take Dee up on her offer, maybe you will be able to keep your torts after all.. I have a question. If you have 2 in a 100 gallon tank how are they able to move and turn around in there? Are you afraid they will break the glass? <<oh scary thought>>

I want a sully in my backyard.. some day some day..

Thanks Jacqui! Yes, I have a very large basement. Right now they don't require the whole thing, but someday....... I love visitors, especially my tort friends! I am always up for it!
