Hi all, I just recently got my russian tortoise. I have calcium supplement powder and was wondering what the best way to put it on the vegetables is. I know for crickets people use plastic bags but should I use the same technique for vegetables???

I usually just moisten the food a bit then sprinkle it on once the food is prepared.

Just sprinkle a pinch on top of the food as needed.

What size and sex is your Russian? Adult males with a good diet really don't need any supplementation. Egg laying females and babies can use some though.

Any tricks on getting them to eat it??? My baby won't touch his food when I sprinkle it and doesn't touch the cuttlebone either. I don't worry too much about my other tort as he is pretty well established and almost 5" now.

Just sprinkle on a tiny tiny amount. Do this every day on your tortoises favorite foods for a week or so. They may skip the first day or two, but then they will come around. They may just nibble for another day or two, but soothes will get hungry. Once they get hungry and start nibbling, they will get used to the taste, smell and texture of the supplement. Soon they won't mind it.

Don't be a fried to use a less than optimal food like romaine or something for a few days to accomplish this goal. Then think how much they will like their weeds and regular food with no supplement on it. :)

We put our leaves in a plastic container sprinkle some in and then put the lid on and shake. Our tori won't eat it with it just sprinkled on top she will pick around it. But with it all over it she has no other option :) but she seems to love it cuz it's usually gone within minutes

Tried the tips above - we will see if it works. How often should they be getting it? I have a 5 year old who is outside most days and in at night and a 2 month old who is inside most of the time now and goes out for little bits of time.

I've have put the calcium powder in a salt or pepper shake and then sprinkle it lightly on the wet leaves about twice a week.

Currently, I've added a little calcium powder to the TNT powder and sprinkled both on the wet leaves. My Russians don't care whether it's added to their food or not.

Good luck.

I'll second that.. works great and puts a even amount on everything in the bag.. Dont wet the food before doing it. wont work as well, but if the food is chopped up, it'll stick to it even better.

I just read on here a girl put a drop of food coloring on the cuddlebone and that seemed to stimulate the tort to want to eat it... I thought that was a good idea as well.
