You can just “spot clean” the enclosure daily, weekly, monthly. I never dumped it all and started new. Over time you take away, add new handfuls, bucketfuls back in, etc. There’s really no reason to dump it all.

It’s all what you are comfortable with - no hard and fast rule. No sense spending a lot of extra money on substrate.
