I only have one dome lamp, and I a planning to swap out the basking lamp for a CHE (Ceramic Heat Emitter) at night. How long do I need to let each bulb to cool off? Do I need to wear any special thing, like oven mitts to handle the CHE?

It would be easier to get another ceramic socket. You can get them at Home Depot for like 13 bucks. May be cheaper at a hardware store.
But, yes, you will need to wear a heavy duty glove. I have a not cheap nock off of the ove glove and the heat works it's way through. The CHE and mvb both take quite some time too cool off.

That sounds like it would get old really fast. For me, the second fixture would be worth it. I would turn off one to let it cool down, then completely forget to turn on the other.

Also, it's hard on the bulbs when they are so hot and you mess with them. Some, if you bump them when they're hot they will shut off, and you'll shorten it's life. It's a much better and easier choice to follow Barb's advice.
