Speedy also lives outside and is locked up in his night box at night . It sounds as if your "hide" could be the equivalent of a night box ?

His hide is where he can go to sleep, get away from his UVB light should he choose, etc. I am currently waiting on a new type of heat emitter to come in that prevents burns and is said to project heat instead of just get extremely hot and heating a small area. They should be here any day (I was actually expecting them today) and I will also see how hey go. Thank you all. Now here's the real question - what should temperatures be? In his basking area and his hide.....

I understood that you were trying to say they work better for smaller enclosures and that a radiator may be better. I'm just trying to put all the pieces and options together. I'll look into a Kane mat for the floor of one corner of his enclosure so he always has a fail safe. And I'll look into reptile mats for his hide. Thanks for the suggestions.
You're welcome. The mats are pretty expensive, especially if you have to buy several.

Eh, I did my research before I brought this dude home. I know they are expensive. They really aren't that bad, all things considered. And if it gives him somewhere undoubtly warm he knows he can go to, then it's worth every penny. I can get two large ones for around $200 and put one in each corner of his enclosure. With his MVB in the enclosure, it might be enough to do the trick. Otherwise, I'll look into heating the whole room up with a radiator if necessary.

When Speedy was inside I kept his basking spot between 95 and 100 F and the coolest area at 80 !
