We have a beautiful snowfall happening now, it started around 3am. It was cold here so it's all laying. Yesterday I look outside as we are sitting for dinner and i see my 80yr old neighbor is trying to set a wooden armed heavy mailbox post. It was 25f out! Lol
The hill dictated an 8' post but his was 6' tall. I got 3 steel rebar rods and angled them into the ground at the bottom of his hole to raise the post. Dumped a bag of sacrete in and a pitcher of water and Jed's a millionaire!
It was too cold to be out there alone...LOL

Today is a snow day, I don't think I'll go to work!
is Jed's millionaire status anything like Bob being an uncle?

I have a casual question....and I don't like to "ask the internet"

Which direction do you place the opening to a birdhouse?

I have NEVER been able to get birds to nest in mine.

We have one on Gods window and it faces N by NE- no one used it last year.

We have another on top of the trellis for 3 years, no dwellers, it faces S

I recently modified both with a small piece of 2x4 with a 1" hole drilled through, placed over the entrance.
Any insights are welcome!
In my uneducated opinion, you want the opening opposite the way the wind blows.

Another idea would be facing east for the morning sun.

Good afternoon/evening all.
Still no news from Cathie?
Between snow and the wildfires in LA the US is having everything thrown at it. I hope it all calms down for you soon. Stay safe everyone.

Good news from the eye hospital today. The pressure in my eye is raised but there's no damage to the optic nerve and no treatment required at the moment just annual checks. It's classed as ocular hypertension rather than glaucoma. The freckle on the other eye, doesn't need treatment either just 6 monthly monitoring to make sure it doesn't become cancerous. So I'm pleased about that. Hopefully nothing else will start to wear out or drop off etc for a while.

Lola has had enough of the freezing cold here, he has slowed down and is eating less even with room service. I've been checking his temps and he has the warmest room in the house. I wish I was small enough to climb in there with him. 😄

Tomorrow I have a funeral to attend. One of my late brother's oldest, dear friends. I just hope the roads aren't too icy on the way to the crematorium. So I'd go and get organized so that I can take my time getting there.
See you later.

I've been feeding wild birds since I moved to Oregon 20 years ago...I have learned a great deal about them, and after a few years the Audoban Society declared my back yard a haven for wildlife...I didn't know that each species of bird nests in a certain way and a certain kinda house...So you decide what species you want to attract, find out what they eat, and what kind of house to build...
example I wanted to attract Swallows...I did what I just told you to do ...complete with buying insects Swallows eat, spraying a hose into the air as they drink on the fly, and they only eat flying insects... now I have families coming back year after year...I have 4 nest boxes...They even get tame enuf I don't bother them doing my yard work...
most birds are particular about nesting..Sparrows will go to an other birds nest box kill the babies and lay their own eggs...I feed Woodpeckers, Hummingbirds and Swallows...

This may help, you don't have to build them but it says where to place them

Good evening everyone!

The dental appointment was fine but I am thinking of everyone in the US with the snow. Here my colleague turned up at the shop covered in ice and I turned up at the orchestra rehearsal in 'freezing' rain. The rehearsal should have finished at 9.30 pm but it was abandoned at 9.15 pm but the conductor had to contemplate driving back to North Essex.

In spite of the general mayhem, none of the current ones are close to us, and the heavy winds are blowing all the smoke away from us currently. Two friends have lost their homes. One in Altadena and one in The Palisades. It's a terrible thing. If it wasn't for the news, I wouldn't even know there were fires. I lost a carport shade structure to the wind yesterday, but that is it so far.

Thanks guys! Wow!

C, the little deer was laying down, he is so cute! The cam took some nice vids of him that I uploaded to our yt channel. It's just for fam and friends but it's nice to view them on the large tv now.

We have too many types if birds here to count and there's always a lot of food in a living forrest by the water....but I'll add another facing E and see if we can't intice someone to move in. Whew, it's 15F out now and the whole house just shook from the wind!
Bet it's chilly to be out there this morning!

Okay....i have been very patient....Miss Cathie, WHERE ARE YOU?

Thankfully Natrah no more snow here or freezing rain. It's been dry lately and sunny here today, but very cold and icy, although the roads are ok. You just have to be careful in case of black ice. I heard someone say that more snow is on the way, but we'll see
I hope you're ok in your corner.

Good afternoon/evening all,
I'm so glad to see Yvonne and Tom are ok and hope none of our other members in LA/ Ca are affected. The fires look like hell and I am so sorry for people who have lost homes and are at risk. The loss of wildlife is heartbreaking too.
So far this winter has certainly seen its share of extreme weather around the world and I think we're stuck with it now. What a depressing thought 😟 - I worry for future generations.

Lola still isn't eating much and hadn't left his hide at all until I came home this afternoon and dragged him out for a soak. He's overdue for a poop so that may be affecting him. I'll get him some cucumber tomorrow to try to help his system along. I've ordered another opuntia pad but that won't be here till the weekend. That usually does the trick.

I hope you're all having a good Thursday.

Does anyone know if Cathie's town has been hit by snow and power cuts? It's not like her to not check in. I am quite worried about her.

Dear Lyn,

My friend in Wales lives near Gwydir Castle which was flooded a short while ago. Is this near you? She also sent me some 'Xmas' card scenes this morning!

Goodnight

No that is in North Wales and I'm in the south eastern corner. It is quite mountainous up there and the weather can be a lot different - often colder and more snowy. There are more Welsh speakers in the north but even the Welsh language differs between north and south.
