Funny not funny story, my great-grandmothers brother served on the British side in the Battle of Normandy because he had been internmented earlier after coming to England (because Finland was so close with Germany back then). This was his chance to avoid imprisonment and he survived it all.
He is a hero @The_Four_Toed_Edward.

I didn't know him, as he died before I was born but not many Finns served in the battle so I thought it was interesting to share. We don't really celebrate the VE day, especially not before hand. After all Finland was kinda on the losing side 😅

You should have a party anyway.

These photos remind me that I saw a fox crossing the road out of the back window of the car while driving yesterday. Never seen a fox outside a zoo before. Our UK members can probably correct me, but I believe there are quite a bit of city foxes in the UK?
Yes their are urban foxes about. They have adapted to city life in their quest for food. They are also quite persecuted in the countryside by some groups of fox hunting thugs who take pleasure in riding their horses and chasing them with packs of dogs. When the fox is exhausted, terrified and caught they let the dogs rip them apart. It's actually illegal now but nothing is done to enforce it. There are however groups of hunt saboteurs who follow the hunts and do their best to disrupt them and protect the foxes. They have had some success in prosecuting and causing some hunting groups to disband.
It's an old barbaric tradition that has no place in the 21st century.

Good morning everyone!

Lyn I will be watching the VE day flypast on the cliffs at 1.45 pm today. I will think of my Uncle Alan who was killed in Italy but I will also think of nana when she used to take mum as a baby to the cliffs to see the Germans coming up the Thames before they were evacuated to Rayleigh when Southend used to try and stop them.

Natrah
Yes I have been watching too, thinking of all those who lost their lives. Luckily my dad came back but he would never talk about it if

I haven't heard of any parties being organised in my area - too much beurocracy and lengthy risk assessment forms to complete these days.
We used to have great street parties when I was a kid, for royal jubilees, weddings, VE Days and investitures etc.

Dear Lyn,

I had lunch at the Cliffs Pavilion theatre cafe and whilst I only heard a couple of Spitfires it was lovely weather to eat outside. How is Lola now is he eating and is he outside?

Sounds like you had a lovely day Natrah.
I don't know if it's because the temps have almost halved since last week, but Lola has reverted to staying in his hide and only eating with room service. He hasn't wanted to go outside for a couple of days. I think he's confused by the weather.

My dad also didn't speak of the war to us kids, ever. He fought in the Navy against the Japanese. Back then if you were Jewish, they tried not to send you to Europe. He was wounded in an explosion during an attack & got a purple heart but that's all we ever knew. I remember watching the war movies as a kid and watching my dad grimace and clench his fists till he saw us looking. It was scary. He lived past the millennium and more importantly, long enough to allow himself to own a Japanese car which wasn't always the case.

We have a celebration here in Chestertown this time of year....it celebrates the fact that at the time of the Boston Tea party, two other cities also participated as well by tossing tea. Annapolis and Chestertown!
Yay us! LOL

Good afternoon everyone!

I have exciting news in that yesterday I found a plaque with my Great-uncle's name on it! He was a Flight Lieutenant who was killed in September 1944 and his grave is in Germany. Mum, nana and above all my great-aunt would have loved to have known this!!!!!

My Dad would never buy a Japanese car either. He did eventually buy a VW Beetle for us kids to learn to drive in, but apart from that he always had British cars.
