No, they either bite right through it or scrap it off with little to no effort depending on there size.

I would always remove the membrane. but it's a pain. The only way I have found is sliding a thin blade under it and twisting. Be careful not to get blood all over the cuttlebone. I tried an orbital sander with 80 grit, and was unable to sand through it at all. If you soak it, it will soften a bit, but so will the bone. My young leopards couldn't bite through it, and were only able to scrape from one side. Once removed, they were eating much more.

I also remove the hard stuff. When my sulcata was small he couldn't bite through it and seemed to ignore it. Once I begin to remove the backing he ate cuttle bone more often. Now he can bite through it but I still remove the backing.

Well see Flash will eat it =__= and I don't know if that's good for him or not. But I'll remove it with a pocket knife. Thanks.

How much is he supposed to eat? He's a fattie so if I leave the whole thing in there he'll prob eat it in one sitting

I usually break it into smaller pieces, but he still gets the entire piece of cuttle bone. Sometimes he will ignore it for days, then gobble it down. Other times he will eat a few bites of it every day until it is gone. I am not worried about him getting enough calcium. Today he ate a half a pound of cactus pad along with some greens and grass.
