Has anyone used this ? I have a check up for my new russian tortoise Tuesday coming up but I am overly not sure their knowledge with my RT. They specialize in reptiles I just still feel iffy.

I was thinking about not going so i wont cause anymore stress and doing the deworming at home. This is just a checkup due to the fact he's a new RT that was housed with 6 others.

Let me know what you all suggest. Thanks!

let me tag some people that might be able advise you on this meditation @Tom @Yvonne G @wellington @zovick

From my understanding all tortoises carry worms/parasites, so long as they aren’t overrun by them or showing any worrying symptoms, I don’t believe you have to de worm, but wait for the others to answer.

A check up won’t be a bad thing as he’s new to you, but tbh for the most part, vets have no clue how to appropriately treat tortoises, usually correct husbandry and housing can avoid visits altogether, which is where we can come in to help advise on set ups😊

I don’t suppose we could get a photo of yours? Along with any of the following information would be great also!😁

Do you know what age the tortoise is roughly?

What sized enclosure do you have?

What kind of lighting/heat are you using? Packaging photos are super helpful!

What type of uv do you use? Again packaging photos are good!

What is your basking temperature directly under the bulb? Overall day temps in the rest of the enclosure? Night temps?

How’s your humidity?

What kind of substrate is it you’re using?

How’s their diet been with you?🙂

Any information/photos you can provide would be great!😊

I have no idea about the ingredient.
However, if you have no idea if he has worms, then don't medicate. Also don't take to a vet unless there is a really good reason to. They don't need check ups as most vets have no clue what they are looking for, nor do they know how to recommend proper care.
I have never treated my tortoises for worms and they have never gone to a vet. My two oldest leopards hatched 2011. My Russian is much older.

Going off of what wellington said and my previous research into the matter, I wouldn’t de worm them, I don’t see the need unless you have concerns for their health, even then tests should be done before meditation.

Hopefully you can get back to us with answers to the questions I posted and we can advise you on the set up side of things🙂

I think you’ll be fine not going to the check up altogether, as you say it’ll cause stress and they’re probably already feeling stressed after the new move to your home, after their settling in period, simply keep a close eye on them, if anything is worrying you, you can post here, if there’s anything of dire concern, a trip to the vet.
A good way to monitor them is monthly weighings🙂

AS others have said, there really is no need to "prophylactically" worm your tortoise. If you aren't seeing live worms wiggling around in the stools or in the soaking water, there is not a worm problem.

Also FYI, almost all tortoises have pinworms to some degree. There is not a need to worm a tortoise if the only worms present are pinworms UNLESS there is an extremely heavy infestation.

What is/are the active ingredients in that bag of worming medicine? I don't see any listed on the front. If you post the ingredients, I can give an opinion on what they might do.

Note that all worming medications are poisons to living organisms, including tortoises. The trick is to give enough medication to kill the worms, but not enough to kill the tortoise (or other host animal).

He's doing amazing and my set up seems to be so comfortable to him. Im on a facebook fourm as well so i was well prepared before i got him. My good friend is a reptile person as well especially torts. I have someone to ask. But I love yalls opinions. It means so much. Helps having a tort and giving him the best care. He already let's me rub his head! He ate so good today as well and I'm not worried at all. Just trying to be sure. I will not de worm him because I don't see anything worrying me to de worm him and I don't think he needs a vet either then. I was just making sure. I can always call them and let them know he's just fine. We go outside 2 to 3 hours a day he loves it and he gets a soak daily.

I think he had passed urate as well. It did not like griddy. I thought it was sperm lmao!!! So thank you all for all your knowledge I love having my tort!!

I agree with what the other posters have said about not worming. If ever you think you need to worm your tortoise, start with a fecal sample to check to see what worms are present, if any, and in what numbers. Then, and only then, can you and your vet decide what wormer will work best for the species of parasitic worm you are dealing with, and if you want to treat at all based on the numbers of worms, and whether or not your tortoise is showing any symptoms.

With that out of the way, I have some bad news for you. FB is notorious for dispensing terrible tortoise care advice, and then banning anyone who tries to give fact and experience based good advice. Give this thread a read through for more information that will help you take good care of your tortoise:

Questions are welcome, and where is Conroe?
