My cheery heads enclosure, I've been reading these bulbs are bad. Just was wondering why?
If you mount that particular bulb horizontally, it is not bad. But that bulb concentrates the harsh rays out the end of the bulb and burns the baby tortoise's eyes.
The manufacturers have supposedly fixed them, however, there was never a recall, so the old, bad bulbs are still on shelves and we have no way of knowing if we're buying a good one or a bad one. It's just safer to not use them at all. Same goes for the curly-shaped bulb.

Compact coil type UVB bulbs have been demonstrated, time and again, to cause serious eye problem with tortoises. We recommend that they are not used. Replace with a UVB tube lamp that doesn't cause this problem.
So if I turn it side ways it could work, but I feel like we shouldn't trust it now

So get a uvb tube from the pet store and we can get the fixture from Walmart or hardware store?

Yes. get a tube to match the size of your enclosure. (18" is very common) And then take the tube with you to the hardware store to match it to a fixture.
Reckon she be ok till tonight with the other one on??

They can go without UV for a while. A long while. Just don't let it get too cold in there.
Red/green???
We are going with red, greens explodes don't use them. It's a cheap brand don't use them
My wife found this on the forum when we were deciding which one, good enough for me

In your cart was a little box with a compact florescent bulb. You didn't purchase that did you? (MINI SIZED COMPACT FLORESCENT)
You still need to get the temps up to over 80.
75 is still a bit too cool. Maybe for an overnight temp.
It's not just for comfort. Tortoises can't digest food unless it is at least 80 degrees.
If all you need now is a tiny heat bump, you could just use one of those cheap "frosted" bulbs. Or for that matter a regular incandescent bulb of maybe 60 watts. Screwed in to the fixture where your old CFL was.

No that was the bulb we were returning, ok more heat now.

Black will work. You want the heat. The light is now O.K.!
Some members don't like the black lights. I use them outdoors because they give off just enough extra heat in my sleeping houses and give off a very faint purple glow. (VERY FAINT) Enough for me to be able to tell that they are working at a glance, without my needing to go out side and open up the lids.
IMO that isn't enough light to mess with the torts sleep cycle. I've used black lights for at least 20 years for this
A CHE has always given off too much heat with my set ups..Lets see if this does the trick for you.

One side of the tank is semi open and I have a hood with a clamp, I'll just snap it on thereBlack will work. You want the heat. The light is now O.K.!
