How many times have I said.. "They spin in the egg and cut the top off like a can-opener!"?

Perfect example -

The little guy had a 'small' yolk-sac.. and is the 5th to hatch out of a 6 egg clutch.

Really...it does look like styrofoam. That is really interesting. I did a full size image of it and the last pic on the left side, you can see the colors of a redfoot.

Someday for kicks you should take a time-lapse photo or video of this process and then speed it up so it literally does look like a little Chelonian can opener sawing its way into the world!

Notice the 'mirror-image' of the patterns on the nose and over his eyes?

SONshine almost always produces these carapace designs also -

He'll be in the 'nursery' incubator for a few more days and then on to waiting for their first bite of real food! Could be another week before they take that first bite.

Really...it does look like styrofoam. That is really interesting. I did a full size image of it and the last pic on the left side, you can see the colors of a redfoot.

Some egg-shells have different density! Some are hard but 'less-dense' so they are easier for the baby to break open.. others are really dense and 'tough' so they are harder for the baby to break and I have to go in after them sometimes. It's a judgement call based on experience I guess - because I believe making the baby "work" to get out of the shell is part of the process of a strong/healthy hatchling.

Thanks - I appreciate the creativity Steph.. let's consider the 'cost-factor' of the camera/equipment needed to take videos of inside an incubator where it's dark and 84F and quite humid..
