Hi my name is Richard and I am from New Mexico. I purchased 2 hermanns and should be here in the next couple of days. I have been reading up about the requirement but was wondering do you guys keep a ceramic heater on at night so they don't get cold?

Yes...that would be good if your night temps are cool 
I have quite a few habitats that I have to keep warm at night. I started off using the CHE to heat the night time, but in trying to lower my electric bill, changed them all out for regular incandescent black light bulbs. I use a 100 watt black bulb. I used to have appx. 12 100 watt CHE's going at night. When I changed to 12 100 watt black light bulbs, I saw a bit of a difference in my electric bill. I know, I know...100 watt che/100 watt bulb should equal the same electric use. But it really did make a difference.
I don't simply as my house doesn't get that cold.
It wouldn't be able to - I think I'M cold-blooded as much as Emrys is, and I need the heating on most of the time and the lasting effects of it during the night.

If you keep them indoor at your house and you warm your house with heater already, then I'd say it's not necesary, especially for hermanns (and other European tortoises) as the can withstand cold weather relatively better than others.

I built the CHE housing for ~$10, be sure to get all porcelain light socket parts that can withstand the heat - no plastics! All the parts were at Lowe's. You can put it in a standard clamp-lamp setup too if you don't want to undertake the project.
I did not incorporate the dimmer switch, but used a Zoo Med thermostat instead which works really well but there are no temperature settings, it's just "Low-High" on the setting knob. The pro is that it works well and is much cheaper than most other thermostats, the con is you have to explore what range of temperature the settings will give you.

I use heat cable in the substrate and a CHE for air temperature.

Hermann's shouldn't need a night time heat source unless the temperatures consistently drop below 50 degrees and the daytime temperatures don't get above 65-70 degrees and sunny often during the daytime. Normal activity levels during the daytime are 72-84 degrees and 50/55-65 at night. Hermann's do well with a 15/20 degree temperature differential from day to night.

No I dont think you would need heating at night as long as your night temps dont drop lower than 16C x

I have a heat matt under tiagos hide it helps with humidit and heat obviously...
Some people do not like matts! :/ It works well for me!

For Hermanns its not about not liking mats, its about Hermanns not needing mats/any extra heating if kept inside and temps do not lower than 16/15C.
