Well it depends on which heating pad it is. Not all of them are suitable for direct bury under the substrate. All the ones we use are stickies to the side of the tank that does not have the CHE or heat bulb. They are stuck on the bottom of the tank too not inside the tank. So which one(brand)do you have? If it also is a wood tortoise table I'd suggest putting little legs on each corner of the enclosure to elevate the bottom of the entire enclosure so it doesn't create a fire hazard.

I use this under the substrate in my baby leopard, baby manouria and baby yellowfooted tortoise tort tables. This will be the third winter of using them. So far the only problem was with one of them that I had buried clear down to the cord. The moisture rotted the cord and rusted the wires. This could have ended badly, but I discovered it when it was not in use and was able to get it out of there.

The moisture in the substrate is heated by the pad and warm, moist air escapes up into the shelter, which is positioned over the pad. The info on the box says it doesn't get any hotter than 80F and I've found that to be so.

I like the idea of having one, for extra toasties. Would it be safe for a tort to burrow down into the substrate and sit on it? I feel like it might get a little hot! Also, would that work with wood? Possible fire hazard?

My seedling mat is sitting right on the plywood floor of the tort table. I've checked it several times throughout the usage and it has never been hotter than 80F.

I have one in my enclosure that I don't use very often but it is placed on the bottom of the enclosure, (which is tile) with then a sheet of glass over to protect from moisture, then substrate covers the glass. The cord at the back runs out of a hole in the enclosure wall (the part of this that is inside the enclosure is also covered by the glass). Temp gun on the top of the substrate reads about 27C usually.
