Hello tortoise forum!
My name is Grey and I have one tortoise called Boris. Boris is a Russian tortoise and is 6 months old. He is very large for his age but was started out horrifically. He was started out with a very pyramided shell and unfortunately, I was given poor information to care for him. I have now had him for 3 months and his pyramiding has gotten much better. He is definitely starting to smooth out from how he started when I got him. I think that my tortoise, like all others, deserves the right for better care. That’s why I’m here. I would like to know everything that there is to know about tortoise keeping, he is currently housed in a 4x2 ft vivarium with a reptibark substrate. I know that later down the line he will need a 4x8 ft enclosure but that isn’t necessary for him right now. I want him to be fully smooth like I see others and I had a few questions.
1. What should the cool side temperature be?
2. What should the warm side temperature be?
3. Does their skin naturally darken over time or will they remain their birth colour forever?
4. Does their shell colour change when their conditions change (e.g. more time outside equal browner and darker shell)?
5. How much should I feed a day? How much is too much?
6. Is 80% humidity too high for a baby Russian tortoise?
7. What does eye swelling look like and how to treat it?
8. How to detect and diagnose respiratory infections?
9. Will my Boris make a recovery and be as smooth as my goal or will he be forever looking like a Lego brick lol?
10. Until what age do you keep them in the enclosed Vivarium?

Advice and answers are always appreciated thanks very much. Sorry if I did something wrong with the forum I am very new to this and just trying to do what is best for my tortoise. Thanks all!

This won't answer everything, but is a good place to start:

Hi Grey and Boris!

Read the basic threads, adjust your care, and then come back with follow-up questions.

This is a great place to get solid info on living with Boris!

Ok I have read this but I still have two questions. Question one is will Boris ever be smooth? Is it possible for me to smooth out his pyramiding as he gets older? How much food do I feed to not over feed? His shell is like this off green colour which I have reason to believe is due to him growing too fast, will this resolve if I can fix his shell pyramiding and not over feed him?

Welcome to the forum. Feed your Boris everyday. They are grazers and will eat throughout the day. Welcome to the forum.

I'm not an expert on babies but his color looks pretty normal to what I've seen of other babies pics on the site...

The shell will not become smooth, even with optimal care, but should not get worse, and as he grows, it should become less pronounced as it gets relatively smaller when compared to the rest of his growing shell.

I feed my russians a variety of greens everyday, along with a bit of other stuff like cactus pads and butternut squash in small quantities. I supplement with mazuri a few times a week and sprinkle some dried flowers and weeds and kelp powder (in place of a vitamin powder) on their food a few times a week.
