It's a male sulcata. Probably at least 5 years. Looks like he's had a tough life so far. Is he yours? There is a lot of info here to help you give him proper care.

I found it crawling towards the freeway. I am going to give it to a rescue. How can you tell it had a hard life? I also have it posted in the lost and found locally. I honestly feel bad giving it back to someone that doesnt know what they are doing with it in regards to its health.

I woulkd take the ad off lost and found and see if there is a TFO member near you willing to take him. That way he will get good care.

Hi Turdle:

Welcome to the forum!!

May we know your name and where you are?

That poor tortoise has not good care. They're supposed to be smooth, not bumpy. It just goes to show you how resilient they are. Also, he's had quite an injury at one time, witnessed by the damage on the bottom of his shell. And yes, he's male. I'd be almost willing to bet that he was kept in a small aquarium for quite a long time and fed either dog food or lettuce.

seeing as the previous owners are not taking care of it properly, I would like to rehome him to someone that can provide him with a proper habitat and has other tortoises. What are your thoughts? What are your thoughts on re-homing fee? How can i verify that the new owners will take care of him?

Welcome to the forum, he is definitly a male Sulcata that has not had the proper care. I honestly hate when I see someone asking for a re-homing fee for a tortoise, and a re-homing fee does not garentee that it will be taken care of.

Your answer intrigues me. You know, of courswe, that "rehoming fee" simply means selling price. Are you saying that tortoises should all be given away?

I am just going to use your comments and hope others include some of the other people's comments as well. This is somebody's lost pet, how would you be feeling if YOUR tortoise escaped and instead of advertising it as lost or giving you the chance to reclaim it, they simply gave it away?

Yes, this tortoise has had bad care along the way. How many of us at one time or the other, failed to give our tortoises adequate/proper diet and care? Think how much bad information is out there, could these owners have been going by one of those "expert" advice care sheets?

OR how about this: the tortoise had a "bad" owner, but somebody has just adopted this animal and has started to give it proper care, care that isn't showing up to our eyes yet.

Geesh folks, why are we always so quick to judge? Why are we always so sure we can and should give found tortoises to new folks rather then try to find their owners?

Like I said Angi, am just using your post as an example and I don't me to cast you in a bad light or anything. I am just sorta disgusted with us on this thread..... :(

I just realized why this guy seems so short. He's missing 2 coastal and one vertabral scutes. I think that this is a case where he could go on and have a decent life, once husbandry issues are sorted out.

Im not sure but based on its current health condition and the fact that it escaped from its habitat, is leaning on the side of bad ownership. I'm just saying...

I want to do the right thing. I will ultimately decide on what I think is right however, I registered to the site for ideas. So keepem coming.

I suggest that you do some quick research on how to take care of a sulcata in the meatime.

In m y opinion, a found tortoise should always be returned to its owner. You can print off some care sheets and give them to the owner if you can find him. Signs on the utility poles, free "found" ad in the newspaper and Craig's list, etc. We may not like how the tortoise looks, but we don't know if the current owner caused the problems or not.

I had a tortoise in pretty bad shape (a rescue) and he escaped. Because of his strange shell shape, he was very adept at climbing.

So its hard for us to actually KNOW the story behind this tortoise. The correct thing to do is to try to find the owner, give the tortoise back and educate him on the proper care of a sulcata.

Are you serious? You didn't even know what you have and now you're going to be the judge and jury as to where this fella's going to end up.....And charge a fee for it?

If it was your tortoise, a rehoming fee may be appropriate if you are no longer able to take care of it. Since it is not your tortoise, you would essentially be doing the same thing as someone "finding" my laptop computer (as an example) and "rehoming" it to someone else for a fee...
