ok so tanker has had this spot for over a month. its been getting worse. it started out looking like a crack. it has never been soft, smelly or had pus. i began treating him with the betadine solution. it seemed to help, i think. it began flaking off, revealing what looks like new shell underneath. Im worried about it though. could it be overfeeding, aka hes fat. if you have any suggestions or ideas please let me know asap. thank you. i plan on taking him to the vet that i go to in one of the upcoming weekends.

heres some other pics...2013-01-05 11.09.28.jpg2013-01-05 11.10.50.jpgIMAG0122.jpgIMAG0303.jpg

It's an old injury. You should leave it alone. While Betadine is good for killing off germs on a new injury, it also inhibits the growth of new cells, so should not be used for an extended period of time. The damage that has been done, has been done. The damaged keratin might flake off more, or it might be all finished flaking off. The white underneath the spot is bone. New keratin will grow UNDERNEATH that bone and eventually the dead bone will flake off the the new shell will be there. But this takes a very long time, maybe even over a year or more.

Thank you ascott, he is beautiful. He always looks people right in the eye. He's so active and silly at times. I see that people are giving their tortoises blankets, do u think it's a good idea?
