Hi guys,

I rescued this red-eared slider 2 weeks ago from a bus-stop, with no rivers or ponds nearby. I've been feeding it turtle food and it's very healthy. I don't know its age but it's neither too small nor too big, the size of its shell from the head to the back is approx. 9.5cm. Last week I started noticing my turtle peeling off very thin white material from its body, with the much larger ones coming from its neck and the relatively smaller ones from its legs. When you hold them, they fold in your hands and feel like wet toilet paper.

Find the pictures of the white materials and my turtle below. You can see it peeling from the back (2 sides of the tail) in the last picture. I hope somebody can please tell me what they are.

Thanks

Your turtle is shedding. That is the shed layer of skin in the picture. Those are a bit larger pieces of skin than would normally flake off with a shedding. Without seeing pictures of the turtle itself - where we can see legs and neck, it is impossible to tell for sure what is going on. However, from the look of the shell, it does have a lot of retained scutes that it has not shed, but it is now in the process of starting to shed those as well. By 4", a slider would normally not have retained scutes like that with a proper diet and conditions. From what little I can see, I would say your turtle is now starting to actually improve and with better conditions, it is now starting to grow better and shed both skin and scutes.

Perhaps you could provide a picture of the enclosure and how you are keeping it with info on temps and lighting as well as diet? Also a picture showing the turtles' skin - head, neck and legs would be helpful.

My turtle shed excessively as he was previously in about 1 inch of dirty water, and I think lack of water prohibited him from shedding properly - which provided some excess skin hanging from his neck and legs.

Just like Mark said, give it some time in the new, clean environment and the old skin should come off.
