This years laying season has started for the Chacos Hopefully I'll have better luck this year than last year. I had 5 eggs last year and 2 I know were fertile (little bitty tortoises inside). I could though never get them to break diapause and start to grow again.
With some new information, I should have a better chance this year.
Here's the first egg of the year and it's a big one :D

No the weight of the container is not part of the 42g :p

Diapause is the time lapse that the egg will take before it will start to grow, alot of species have something like this. In the wild its a way of making sure the egg will hatch during the best time, once it starts diapause it usually will only come out of it in certain conditions which could be hard to replicate in captivity.

Good luck to you with the eggs! The Tortoise book says it is very difficult to breed Chacos in captivity, but if anyone can succeed at it, you can. I'd sure love to see photos of hatchling Chacos!

Thanks Jacqui and Scott :)

Instead of cooling down for just 1 month, I'll be cooling down for 3 month. So it will be 1 month in the incubator at 30C, 3 months cool down at about 16C, than back in the incubator at 30C for 4 or 5 months :D hopefully :p

Oh and Robyn the average has been 33g. Hatchlings should be 20 to 24g

Congratulations on the eggs! I hope you get the diapause figured out and have babies in 2010. That would be an exciting accomplishment. Can't wait to see them.
