On another topic, do you find softshells aggressive?
Growing up in China, I've seen lots of Chinese softshell turtle (not sure about the real name). Sadly to say, people breed them or capture them for food... It was believed to have super high value nutrition under the pretense of Chinese medicine... That being said, my point is my mom told me that when she was a young girl, she was teasing a bunch of softshells at home when one of them bit her finger. The turtle wouldn't let go of it, and they have to kill it to let my mom's finger free. She then had a total swollen arm for weeks.
Since I heard the story, I've never dared to touch a softshell turtle, well, not the adult ones. I'm wondering if what I heard has some truth to it. Or maybe it is species specific? ?
I now just adopted a tiny baby 3-striped mud turtle and named it Godzilla. It's adorable as hell and super hard to find in Canada. I'm wondering if one day he/she will bite my finger off too. ?
They do bite when you bother them, but many turtles do.

Is this "no eyes" thing especially found in the manouria? And maybe other deformities? If so, why?

Should you keep breeding, with so many having disabilities?

?So many? I've hatched hundreds of babies over the years and this is the only one that had no eyes. Also, this is a young female who has only nested four times in her life. She's still getting the hang of it.

If the animals came to me with names I keep the names, however if they didn't have a name, or if I hatched them here, they don't get names. Right now I have many with the names "Female #1, Female #2, Male #4, etc. and I put one or two or three, etc. dots of nail polish on the corresponding vertebral scutes.
Cool.
I thought only I did that.
I only have 3 torts with names. The adult female RF named Julio while she was a juvenile. And Wild Child. The RF that hatched out in my enclosure and looked to be about 3 months old the first time I even noticed her and was named by a forum member. Two torts gifted to me by a fellow member. One is Waffles. She has some strange pyramiding. The other RF. I forgot the name. She's now number 5.
My vet records show either "No name" or #1, #2, etc

Wow guys, tough room! I know what your blood pressure did when you read the comment, it was my first reaction too.....but that's all it was, a reaction. We don't know the poster's intent, maybe it was actually meant to promote healthier offspring and not off-putting at all. I know I am grasping at straws but Kerry has taught me to give folks the benefit until we know otherwise. That person has been a member here much long than I, maybe, just maybe it's not quite time to break out the powder?

Besides, most folks write like crap....they can't write what they mean and they don't get that teasing and sarcasm are only to be attempted by those with extended vocabularies. Given that many are simply unable to correctly express themselves, we need to lower our bar of expectation or at least allow for them.

I am just more removed from the situation(not my family they're screwing with....I'm joking!!!<LOL>) so I can pretend to be the "voice of reason"............... generally out of character for me.....LOL

Besides, IT's FRIDAY so I get to see my Kerry! She's an ADD too Mags!! No, seriously ADHD and sometimes all over the place but it always comes from a good place in her heart and she's still the most magnificent woman I've ever met! I'll take that any day over "boring"!

Obbie, some folks here did not understand that your comment was made in innocence and was well meant. They jumped to a conclusion, which we must all avoid doing to keep things nice and even all round, right?
Certainly, some people don't care about breeding healthy animals, they just want money no matter what it takes to get it. But That does not apply here, so don't worry!

So they shouldn't say anything to a poster if you don't know the person or the person's background...it's that kind of crap that starts trouble. Think...think before you post...

WOW ! I apologize, I didn’t have the facts, that it was one tort, it resonated as it just happens. I’m all about genetics, so important, especially if their numbers are in decline. So I think I’ll stay off, I love the info I get on here so, for Mali’s sake I’ll keep reading.
