Ideas for water dish

I have a small 3 month old Russian. He has a shallow dish that he loves to walk through again and again until the waters gone and his bed is mostly in the dish. I'm conscious because he's so small a deep dish would be difficult for him to get at. I saw one with pebbles in that looked good but was wondering if anyone had any good methods for a better water dish?

I prefer the terra cotta saucers people with potted plants.
They are shallow, provide good traction and I even think they look nice.

Try getting a large one. By large I mean wide. Even wide ones are shallow. If you do one significantly wider than your tort is long, it won't be as easy to fill with substrate.

That's what I usually use as well. Sometimes a glass pie dish also.

Putting pebbles around the outside of the dish, also helps a bit with how much they drag into their dish. In the end, it's going to get dirty because that's what tortoises do. ;)

For hatchlings sometimes the plant saucers are too steep for them to climb in and out safely, so I found some really cute cat food dishes and that's what I use for hatchlings:

It doesn't look like they're sunk into the substrate in the pictures, but they are. I'm going to try to find some flat stones to see if I can keep it clean longer, like Jacqui's suggestion.

(too lazy to pick just one, so here are a couple of different waterdishes using rocks, pebbles, and/or moss. The yellow ones are actually small plates.

I love ceramic dishes. The terra cotta plant trays are the best!
I also have rocks around my dishes, but that's not stopping a determined, dirty tort :D!
