So the worst part of box turtle ownership is keeping their water clean. It does not help that i use a Pyrex baking pan, which is heavy enough on it's own, but with water included is pretty awkward to get out and change. For those in outdoor enclosures, is it easier to keep their water clean? what is your set-up like?

Clay plant saucers are easy. My sister uses paint trays.

I.M.O. changing the water daily and wiping out the water bowl is the only good answer.
And yes. The smooth sided dish should be replaced.
I've should of mentioned it's not a leave it and forget it thing. It's more of a visual thing and instead of cleaning everyday the pan gets a wipe down once a week. The water never had a odor and for the most part kept the water clear. Yes the filter comes with suction cups. I used straps not because my sides are wood but also because a turtle could push it right over.

I've tried a deeper pan with a filter but it is just too much work to take out when the water needs changing and doesn't keep it clean enough for more than a few days. A shallow terra cotta saucer I dump, wipe down, and refill everyday is the best solution I've tried.

Box turtles make mud out of their water pans. It's just what they do. Just change water daily. I use glass pie plates and it's easy enough.
