After reading several posts about medium questions, concerning Mediums and Mosses, I thought a little “Pictorial†might help ….
Green Moss there are approx 660 genera and 14,500 species. Mosses come in all styles short and tall along with different colors. This type grown in Northern California.
Sphagnum moss is grown in Bogs around the world . It has a graded system in the industry of “quality†referring to how fluffy soft as well as the length of the strands.
This is a “long strand†version.
Peat moss is a dead form of Sphagnum moss, ground fine.
Here a “wild" garden type of Green Moss naturally growing at the Cove’
Vermiculite is a natural mineral. It looks like shiny mica–sort of a flaky rock. In the garden it helps keep soil light for good airflow and retains water. It is also fire resistant. For use as a hatching medium alone or mixed with others works well.
Perlite is a naturally occurring siliceous rock. When heated it expands from four to twenty times its original volume which creates the extremely light sterile
material that allows for much airflow for it has low water retention. Mixed with Vermiculite makes for a super incubation medium .
