My second drinking fountain attempt developed yet another design flaw.
After my 1st design had numerous leaking problems, i have since attained a system with no leaks. BUT, after i added a male to the family, activities really ramped up, if you know what I mean. Lol. They pretty much destroyed my serene landscape and drug countless bunches of dirt into the fountains. Even the ones with stones in the middle. IMG_4640.jpeg

My original plan was to have the water “refreshed” every 3 hrs by automatically running the pumps for 30 seconds. Due to drain clogging issues, i resorted to the fact i would manually run the pumps for 15 seconds, twice a day. That won’t work either. Since the increased activity now, the dishes get full of loose substrate and my drains clog. My design flaw is that the drains are too small. They are 1/2” and should be minimum 1” id. If i still want to have the automatic ease of “water bowl refreashing”, i now have to change all the drains and fittings to at least 1”. Cha-ching, Cha-ching, yet again.

So I guess I have to ask.... was this design worth it in the long run? I have a similar design in mind for a different purpose. Wondering if it might be prudent to add a maceration chamber.

My design is simply to save me time. My tort room is in my barn basement, not my house. Any automations help. A larger drain line will definitely fix my problems. I have the filtration set up to filter out whatever needs filtered. With larger drains, i might be able to go on a 100% self refreshing schedule. The part that suckz is that i missed this design flaw. I absolutely know better about drain sizing based on my work history and life’s experiences.
To simply answer your question….. yes.
Btw, what is a macreation chamber?

My idea is for an indoor soaking tub. I gather you are recycling the water through a filter? Mine would simply drain out to the yard outside. Given all the particulates and matter that would have to flow out thru the drain, what size drain pipe would you recommend? It'll be a 32x32 shower base. I also need to account for any overflow.

I have plans for an indoor soaking tray also.
I will manually turn a pump on from a heated water source, probably a 10 gal aquarium with aquarium heaters. Fill tray up with 90 deg water. Place tort in. Hopefully tort will stay soaking for awhile. Then a 12v normally closed solenoid will automatically open maybe 3 hrs later and discard probably soiled water outside or to a 5 gal bucket to be dumped. My original plan was 3/4” drain, but now it will be larger. Another thing to consider is making a drain type bulkhead that will completely drain the tray. Most bulkheads purchased set up mabe 1/4 - 3/8 above the tray floor.
This is on hold until i fix my drinking water fountains and also get a grasp on my torts breeding routines.
