Hi, I’d really appreciate some opinions on my musk turtle. Does s/he appear overweight? And is the plastron healthy looking? I’ve looked at a few guides online but I’m still not sure!

Thank you so much for any info

I have an overweight musk turtle (currently on a diet). Yours looks just fine to me.
It’s my understanding that Musk turtles aren’t really designed to fit fully inside their shells like box turtles. They can rely more on speed and agility for escape. And probably some pretty good snapping/biting, too! At least that’s what my musk turtle, Nelson, tells me! 😁🙃

Pickles is a Common Musk 😄. I love the razorbacks. I was very torn between the two species honestly.

I’m glad to hear that s/he looks about the right weight. I started to get paranoid that there was some extra fleshy looking bits around the front legs! And am I right in saying that it’s normal for a musk to have a softer feeling plastron? Not super soft, but more flexible than a tortoise’s for example.

Well, the plastron itself is much reduced in size from the mud turtle type plastron, and the bridges are smaller. So the plastron may feel like it has a bit more give, but I wouldn't think it should feel soft and squishy.
