so I adopted that redfoot from our local reptile rescue yesterday. This is a picture of him taking a stroll in my backyard upon arrival. Obviously he is a bit dry! That will change soon. I measured and weighed him. He is 8 1/2 SCL (about) and weighs 1348 grams. I think that's about 3 lbs or just under? Anyway, he is eating like a pig already. He was eating my grass and weeds when he got here and this morning already ate a huge plate of spring mix, grated zucchini, and grated sweet potato. Now to think of a name. My daughter suggested the name George.newredfoot.JPG

He looks pretty outgoing already. I can see why you couldn't resist, Lisa :)

Name picking drives me nuts, but if your daughter saw a George in him, I say go for it.

Hi,
Nice to hear what you did for George! He really is a cutie! I wish we had rescues here. If you dont mind me
asking what was his fee? Good luck with him!

his adoption fee was $100. I adopted a box turtle from them previously who had an adoption fee of $50.

Hey quick question. What shelter did you adopt him from? I'm also looking for shelters but I haven't found a single one near me that has red foots.

Hi,
I wish we had that kind of rescue here in Ontario!

The Little RES Q http://littleresq.net may be the closest reptile rescue to you (they're the closest to me, at least), but they primarily get aquatic turtles. The market is still hot enough that people can sell their under-wanted torts on craigslist for many 100s of dollars (there are almost always bumpy redfoots on CL in the greater Toronto area if you are wanting 'second hand'). They rarely end up in our shelters as true rescues because there are readily people willing to pay $500-600 for a tort in bad shape. Sometimes they end up at pet stores as buy-backs or tradeins and the best stores see they end up with rehabbers, but given the Canadian tort market, many people pick the money route rather than the best-for-the-tortoise route.
