Maybe the gravel isn't such a great idea. It's cold. It gets eaten and poo is hard to clean off of it.
With soil you can just spot scoop it.

if I were you I would read the thread in general discussions titled 'You know you own a tortoise when.....' Its all very light hearted but owning a tortoise isn't cheap or easy and you need to seriously ask yourself if you can make the long term commitment needed. If the answer is yes then I wish you good luck with persuading your parents and every happiness with your tort.
