Hi! So, i live in Argentina, in the city. I was walking home a few days ago and saw a few dogs barking at what i thought was a rock. When i looked closer i realized it was a turtle. It was walking on the side of the road. I picked it up because i was afraid the dogs would hurt it or it would get run over by a car. His shell isnt in very good conditions but its not soft. I appears that they are old injuries. I took him to a vet but since turtles aren't sold here because there an endangered species there aren't any specialist. The vet told me that it's a male and around 20 years old. He obviously belonged to someone because he's very friendly and lets me pet him and isn't afraid of my dog (which is very sweet and doesn't mind the turtle, although I never leave them alone together just In case) and because he couldn't have survived that many years living on the road in the middle of the city. Anyway, I would love some advice. I feed him all kinds of veggies but he only wants tomatoes or fruit and I know I can't feed him that everyday so I mash some tomatoes and mix it with other vegetables and he's starting to eat lettuce, zucchini and carrots. I keep him on my balcony which is very safe, gets sunlight and shade but not all day. I also have a yard that we share in the building and I take him everyday. At night I bring him in my room and he sleeps on the bottom shelf of a book library I have which I emptied for him. The thing that worries me the most is his shell. I would like to know what you guys think and if there's something I'm doing wrong. I really want to give him a good life, I thinks he's been through too much already. I'm sorry it's such a long post.

Hi, and welcome! Let's send a shout-out to @tortadise or @Baoh to see what kind of tortoise this is. I'm thinking it might be a Chaco tortoise. The bottom shell looks like old shell rot to me. Does it smell? If it's old shell rot, you don't need to do anything. Can you pick it off with your fingernail or is it hard?

Chaco tortoises eat grasses and greens.

Welcome to the forum, @camila massucco .

Please do not allow your cute little tort to get used to eating tomatoes. This would give you a lot of trouble getting him to eat food that's more healthy.

Any pics of your tort's enclosure?

Give your tort a daily soak in warm water.

I dont give him tomatoes anymore, y sometimes mix just a little bit with the other vegetables so he starts eating. I do soak him everyday and he seems to really enjoy it. I keep him on my balcony, I have a large plastic bin that I filled with organic soil and I put him in there to feed him so he poops and urinates there and not on the floor. It's easier to clean. The balcony is more than 6ft long and completely secure, there's no way he could fall off and there's nothing in it but him so he has a lot of room to roam. I put a small box with a whole in it for him to hide if he wants to and I bring him inside every night or if the weather is bad. Do you think that's enough? He's 20cm long. Is the balcony ok or should o buy a tank?IMG_20171206_111458366.jpg

Hello !

Very nice tortoise. A tank would restrict his environment greatly. Torts do need to roam. Maybe you could add some shade & interest with plants. Make sure he has a low water dish too. I use the the under pot clay/ ceramic ones. They are cheap, low, & hard to spill.

Good fortune with him.

Yeah, I really don't want to put him in a tank. Besides the balcony I have a yard I take him everyday. He does have shade in the balcony and it doesn't get direct sunlight all dal. Just for a few hours in the morning. He does have a water dish. I'll have to put some plants, thank you for the advice!

Oh I believe he's lucky! I felt really bad at having had to place Oli in an enclosure. Torts are used to roaming around in the wild with no boundaries whatsoever.

He'll be fine, don't worry.
