The main burrow (which is made up of cinder blocks, insulation boards, concrete and dirt) is in the middle facing south. There are two other little hidey holes on either end of the enclosure. They are broken pots 1/2 buried in the dirt.

Got a lot of different weeds, grasses and flowers growing in there. A good sized water plate for him to soak and is easy to get in and out of. We're in southern AZ so we get A LOT of sun, so shady areas were very important.

This is very, very nice enclosure. I do believe some one will be very happy to live in it.

That's just a beautiful and well thought out habitat for any tortoise.

You did an awesome job! In the second picture, what is the plant on the front right hand side?

The tall one on the right is called an "Ocotillo", they are all over the southwest. We shaved the bottom part of all the thorns so Mr. Pickles won't get stuck. We're going to start putting him in there tomorrow.

got a quick question! What substrate do we put in the burrow? Keep in mind the "dirt" around here is very dry and more like concrete then dirt. (we're in the southwest) Some sort of mulch mixture maybe?

I really don't think you have to worry about that. They are very strong diggers, plus they pee on the soil to make it easier to dig.

This is the bottom of the burrow....... He won't be able to dig thru this. If I put a substrate in there, he still gets his need to dig and be safe and cool.............

Oh...well then, any substrate that you can use for tortoises would do ok in there. I think I'd fill it with dead leaves.

Outdoors I typically use the native dirt for their burrows. If you prefer you could add some coco chips, coco coir, or orchid bark. At HD or Lowes they sometimes label the fine grade orchid bark as "Pathway Bark". 2.0 cubic feet is only about $5. Same thing at Petco will cost $12 for a little tiny bag.
