Morning all

I just wanted to introduce myself and hopefully pick up some help and advice along the way :)

We've recently taken on two non uk bred Torts from a lady that's had to give up her house and move into a flat, needless to say she's upset that after 35 years with her ( they had a previous keeper too ) she's had to find them new homes.

The first one is Peggy. She is a large girl somewhere between the ages of 80 - 100. She's a spur thigh

Second is the rebel Henry. He's somewhere between 50 - 65 we believe and is a very mischevious Hermanns, if there's a tiny gap, he will find it :)

I've trawled the internet since we knew we were taking them on but struggle to find much on looking after those that were brought into the country many years ago, so are finding our feet with them as we go along

They used to just roam outdoors free when warm then hibernate about October until March or whenever spring decides to arrive.

Presently we have them running riot in our adapted small bedroom ( floor lined with waterproof matting then substrate of topsoil and sand mixed on top ) with a UVA/UVB lamp waiting for the weather to pick up a bit here in the UK. They've been fully awake for about 3 weeks now

Outdoors, we have made what we hope is a Henry proof pen for them to live in whilst we aren't there to watch ( it's 15sqm ) with full run of the garden when we are around.

Peggy woke from hibernation with a slightly runny nose and has wheezed for the past week so she is booked in to see a specialist vet on Monday, along with Henry as we figured it can't do him any harm to be checked out either :tort:

We've been bathing them every other day and feeding them leafy lettuce ( not iceburg ) and watercress to keep them going until the weeds start to come through

I've read online that mixed breeds shouldn't be kept together but with these two being together so long now ( at least 35 years ) I'm assuming it's fine to continue with this ?

Does it sound like we are on the right track with them or is there something I need to be doing to make sure they are happy and content :)

Thanks for reading my ramble

Andrea x

Hello and Welcome:) I would think that them being together for so long already, it's fine to leave them together. However, being in a new place may bring on some trouble that normally wouldn't happen in their old home. So, with that in mind, if it were me, I would keep a close eye on them to be sure bullying doesn't now start.

Hi and welcome! I love old tortoises. :) At this point and time, unless behavior problems happen, I would just leave them together. I do have a question, why are you bathing them so often?

Welcome Andrea! Amazing journey those two tortoises have had, all those years. So glad you found this forum where so many are happy to help and there are experts to assist also. Yay! I too would love to see pictures of your elders when you can. Best wishes on learning about their care and your new adventure with them! : )

Thank you all for your warm welcome

We will keep a close eye on the bullying. Their previous owner said Henry used to be the one taking the best sun spot and pinching the food, so far though Peggy seems to be the one determined to take control, hogging the food and pushing him out of the way. We resolved this by placing the food far enough apart that she can't sit on one pile whilst eating the other :)

We bath them every other day as we thought we had to between them waking from hibernation and going out. They only have a small drinking bowl in relation to their size ( ie Peggy can't sit in it ) do we not have to do this as frequently ? They don't seem to mind it, bless

I have pictures the previous owner took over summer last year, I'll upload them now. Peggy is about 12 inches long with a big domed shell. Henry, probably 7 inches with a flatter domed shell

They have such strong characters and quirks, we absolutely adore them.

My BF and I are both in our thirties and it's amazing to think how much longer they've been around and what they must have seen. Peggy may even have lived through 2 world wars which staggers me !!

Pics to follow with luck :)

Hopefully these have worked ;) the marks you see on Henry's shell are from when he disappeared for 6 months a few years ago. It was thought he'd gone for good but he'd burrowed down and hibernated outdoors all winter and re emerged when Spring arrived. I am going to have to watch him closeley :p

As soon as we get them into our enclosure ( it's only 6c here ) I will upload current pics. Hopefully all goes well at the vets Monday
