Hey guys so I found a turtle at a animal shelter one day. i felt really bad because it was in a very cramped cage and it could barely move to I adopted it. I was told it is a Sulcata Tortoise. I've been researching online what I can feed it and the living conditions it requires. But i would like some input from an actual owner. I was told its not suppose to eat fruits and vegetables. but the shelter was feeding it that. Im just a little confused with what to do. But i want my tortoise to grow up big and healthy. Please help.

Hi Meowmeow there are loads of people on here with Sulcatas and I'm sure they'll help soon but meanwhile find the care sheet under species specific (think it may be under African Torts) that will answer some of your questions until the really experienced folk come along.

Fruits and veggies are not good. Sulcatas are grassland grazers. Their diet should be grass and broadleaf weeds. There are really good care sheets available. Pictures of your tortoise and enclosure will be helpful.

Welcome to the Forum. At the beginning of the Sulcata Section there are some diet and care sheets that can help you understand the feeding requirements for your sulcata. In general they require a high fiber, low protein diet. They do not process sugars very well. Most fruits and veggies are much too high in sugar to be fed on a regular basis.
