My wife picked this little guy up today. I guess I need to figure out the best way to try and clean up the mess

I would just rub it whenever you get a chance. May take a while. It looks like it's already starting to wear off. It might even be water soluble. Take a soft bristle brush and some baby shampoo soapy water and do a little scrubbing.

Thanks, I'm soaking now, it's pretty thick on top. I will try everything you said.

That's fine! Any bits will wear off on their own.

Thanks for rescuing the little guy!

And thank goodness it was only water-based paint!

That' looks like a pretty young turtle. Did your wife buy it?

No I think it's an adult, A lady brought it to her at Church. I guess it was at a garage sale yesterday and the lady told my wife she knew exactly who to bring it to. The people just gave it away.

Not sure what to do here, I had some friends over tonight for a shrimp boil and pool party and they told me about a turtle they saw today at the local fair. They have turtle races every year and some of their friends had a 3 toed they brought with lots of shell damaged and it was painted, they told me the people didn't know what to do with it after the races and of course gave them my number. They just called and sent a pic and ask me to take it. I have no room right now but hate for them to just let it go in this condition. Stuck between a rock and a hard place.

I suppose you could do a temporary rescue and try for an immediate (as much as possibe) rehome.

Wowzers, the paint looks caked on pretty good. Your gonna need to tell your wife your quitting your job to start your own turtle rehab center:) I bet she would love the news!

They took him to a vet locally who said he would take him. I guess it also had a bigger hole in the back of its shell and he was willing to keep it for treatment. However they did bring another over that was also given to them at the race.
I'm not sure how I feel about these races, most kids just pick them up and put them in a box until the races and then just dump them somewhere. This one was in a small AC box with some grass and bowl it couldn't get in or out of.ImageUploadedByTortoise Forum1467065080.738471.jpg

I think the people that sponsor the turtle races need to step up and take responsibility.

They should deal with abandoned animals and cleaning the paint off...and have a release program.
