Some species of tortoise hold their urine inside them because they don't know when they're going to find the next drink. After the urine has been inside a tortoise for a while, and the tortoise's body had re-used the liquid in it, what you have left over is called urates. This is quite normal. Eventually the urates will get pee'd out. If they are hard and chalky, then your tortoise in NOT well hydrated. If they are runny or like cottage cheese, its normal. It has more to do with water and hydration than calcium.

When they're babies you can do forced soaking, but once they're big enough to live outside, you have to hope they get drinks as they need them. Providing clean water is the best you can do, and hope he drinks it.

Depending what your weather is like right now :D and depending on what size your tort is :p You can still soak him, if you need to you can use one of the kiddi pools or you can turn a sprinkler on as some like to drink from puddles vs water dishes....

I have a CDT that drinks soooo much when I turn the sprinkler on and to this day I have never seen him drink from his water dish when he is outside....
:D

They soaks will help keep him hydrated. My adults also have a waterer, but they all prefer to drink from dirty mud puddles. Either from the sprinklers or from the occasional rain.

Mine stopped having urates altogether for a while, then he went on a cuttlebone binge and has quite a bit of urates now, all runny and healthy, just a lot.
