My Redfoot Tortoise is 11 years old and we’ve never seen anything like this before. During his last round of growth, the “seams” of his shell (Sorry, don’t know the right terminology) grew in black or turned black and started peeling off. Only things that changed were 1) we used a ceramic heat lamp over the winter. We’ve always used a red heat lamp, but he had plenty a room in his cage to get away from the heat and he did not choose to. So I don’t think the temperature was too hot. It MIGHT have been too dry because of our heater running. I was wetting the substrate often during those months. 2) I gave him powdered vitamins and calcium/d3 supplements on a much more regular basis than usual (3-4 times per week).

Any ideas? I’ve looked all over the internet and searched the forums here, and I can’t find anything like it. You can see in these photos how the new growth ring edges are darker.

Also, that one scute in the second photo (above his tail) seems sunken in. I don’t remember that ever being like that, but I might not have looked closely before. It might have been that way all along and I’m just now freaking out and noticing every little thing. Is that normal? He just reached sexual maturity about two years ago and I would think that changes the shell shape.
