Hey guys,

I just have a quick question. I recently bought another new juvenile red foot tortoise and I have noticed when bathing she poops and it seems that some of the lettuce she consumed is not being properly digested or being digested at all. Can anybody shed some light on this issue, what can cause this? Is it sometimes normal? Behavior and appetite is normal and both my RF torts appear to be doing great. I plan on bringing the new tort to the vet just for an initial check up early next week, I was just wondering is all. Thanks for your help guys!

I would recommend getting a stool sample checked out when you go to the vet. This may not be the case, but sometimes parasites/flagellates can be the reason for passing undigested food.

Enclosure temps are 90 basking and 78-82 ambient with 80% humidity. No coil bulbs are used I have an mvb 125 watt and on the basking area I have an additional 75w uva bulb and at a 100 watt ceramic with night time temps ranging from 75-81. Cypress mulch as substrate and I feed dandelion, collard, escarole, radichio, endive, apple (no seeds), mango, black berries, watermelon, canteloupe, strawberries and yellow squash to both of my red foots. They are both about a yr and a half old or so maybe a little younger and weigh 8-8.25 oz. my others torts stool is fine and the newer torts seemed ok today was a whitish pale color today but a couple of times like stated has had looked leafy/undigested. I do plan on getting the stool tested during our vet visit. Today the newer tort (bella) did not seem to want to eat she was active and alert, could she just not be hungry (they did have a nice meal later yesterday)? She made a bowel movement in her bath today but was whiteish, I typically give my torts 3-4 baths a week, I do not know if that is too much or not. Any suggestions, advice or thoughts are welcomed, thanks all. Oh and I'm currently not home so I will get pics ASAP ( currently at a bridal show case getting yelled at lmao).

Undigested food in the stool is very indicative of parasites, go get that little baby tested :)

So I went yesterday to the vet they did and xray and ran a fecal examination. Xray and stool sample both came back normal and doc says she look great, felt a little light is all but she didnt eat the previous and had bowel movements a couple of times she weighed in at 7.85 oz. With that said he does have me treating both torts with panacur for 3 days I guess to play it safe since we didn't have results right away and then has me separating them for a little while then wants me to clean the enclosure thoroughly and replace substrate, since all seems normal what could cause these stool issues I have been experiencing? Any thoughts? And again thank you everyone for the replies!

If she has some kind of parasite depending on the type, ova aren't constantly being shed in the feces. They tend to a few weeks intervals were you won't see many. Try the Panacur and monitor for the next few weeks.
