I've decided to (in light of the oncoming winter and also other considerations) move to a partially prepared diet for my hatchling red foot. Right now, he gets an assortment of weeds from the lawn, peas, bell peppers, kale, celery, and tons of other veggies. I'd like suggestions on processed food brands, especially ones good for omnivores. I'm concerned he doesn't get enough animal protein. Suggestions?

thanks!

I have preferred, when using tortoises specific processed foods, to use ZooMed's Grassland and Forest pellets. Either would be acceptable, with protein addition coming from hard-boiled egg. I prefer these as they do not contain an abundance of grains, but rather grasses and broad-leafed greens. They are animal specific (tortoise) feeds made from what the animals actually eat, not by-products of other agricultural endeavors like so many other 'dog food' looking pellets are. I am pretty sure ZooMed is the only tortoise food manufacture/seller that does this. They cost more than other types of 'dog food' type tortoise pellets, but I think you get a better, though not less expensive feed.

As an aside, when I say hard-boiled egg, for tortoise food, I don't really hard-boil the egg in boiling water. I crack the egg open in to a water wet-ed bowl, then add a bit more water, beat the egg with a fork and microwave it for one to two minutes, let it cool and put that mixed into the salad. If it is too much, the remainder can be kept in the covered bowl in the frig for a few days.

My Redfoot eat some Mazuri Tortoise Chow in their diet.
It's simple to "make" (By adding warm water) when more ideal foods are not available and they love the stuff.
How often should it be fed has been a debate here, but the feeling is that it's safe to use very regularly. I have used it for the past 10-11 years.

You're going to hear a laundry list of preferences on this topic. I agree with Will and primarily use zoo med forest diet. I also use mazuri. Both have their strengths and weaknesses.

I like the Zoo Med product, however, I have such big tortoises, it would be cost prohibitive for me to buy that. So I use Mazuri.
