I'm located in central Texas where it is often dry. I am finally putting the finishing touches on the outdoor enclosure's landscaping. Despite having an elaborate pond, I fear they are still much too dry. I have 1 male and 2 female adult/sub adult redfoots. The major thing that causes this concern is their shells. They don't appear dark black like others, but their skin is moist often. I did purchase a shell moisturizer which appeared to work last year, but have since stopped using it. I may begin to use it again.
Being that it is an outdoor enclosure, I can not control the humidity. I have read that a redfoot should have humidity around 70-80%. How do other's achieve this? I have thought about a sprinkler system on a set timer for 2-3 showers a day (5-10 minutes each). Although this would keep things wet, it will not increase the ambient humidity. Is this enough to substitute? The enclosure is 40ftx25.
Any ideas are appreciated! Am I just over reacting?
