Hi there,
I am an experienced tortoise keeper.

I just can't decide Pancake hatchling or Russian Tortoise Hatchling. I found a great breeder of Pancakes. No breeder on Russians.

What do you guys think? And, why?

*I DID check other threads and found none regarding this topic* :D

In general Russians are more outgoing and bold. Most pancakes are more secretive. This is a generality and their are exceptions. I LOVE both species and both species are relatively easy to keep and feed.

So it depends on which criteria is most important to you. Do you favor a unique appearance or an outgoing personality?

There are lots of good russian breeders here on the forum too. I have first hand experience with babies from @kanalomele and @Carol S . I can't recommend either of them highly enough. @biochemnerd808 didn't have babies when I was looking to buy, but I would highly recommend her too. There are many more here that do a great job breeding and starting russians, but I have personal experience with these three.

I didn't mention the pancake breeders, because it seems you already found them.

Good luck on deciding. I'd get one of each and just have more enclosures. Then you could come back and compare and contrast how wonderful EACH species is for the rest of us!

Yes, if you have the space, get one of each .
Forced to choose, i'd go for the pancake as I am familiar with the Mediterranean species but pancakes are different and exotic to me.
But for you, it may be the reverse.

Thanks Tom. Which do you feel is more hardy Tom?

Both are very hardy and adaptable. I can't say one is more sturdy than the other. I have more experience with russians and I've seen them survive some incredibly bad conditions. Luckily most pancakes aren't subjected to poor treatment, so I really can't say how they'd compare.

Me personally, I'd pick the Russian. My cousin has a trio of pancakes that I took care of when I house sat for him a few years back. I personally find their secretive behavior unappealing. Russians, on the other hand, are typically very bold and personable.

My russian is only a few months old, but has become really out going already. I can gentle pet his head with my index finger, where as when I first got him he would just retreat into his shell. Now when he sees me coming over with food he will walk right over to me as well. Hopes this helps you out

Russians are a great, hardy, outgoing little tortoises. They are very adaptable to different climates. They do not play well together and do best alone.
